Guatemala: A Field Trip

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”  Isaiah 6:8

Recently, while in Guatemala on a mission trip I was asked to say a few words on behalf of the Presbytery. This was on Sunday and by this point we had been on the ground for seven days. Seven days of prayer, wonderful excitement and above all work. Thanks to Reverend Steve Tisinger of Christ Our Anchor, we had seen and experienced the best of what Guatemala had to offer. We met very proud, dignified and deeply faithful indigenous people who after years of discrimination, murder and suffering, their sense of generosity and spirit remained unbroken and without question. Now, here we were at the culmination of a week of spiritual growth and development; and, I somehow needed to sum up what I saw, felt and experienced. What I knew for sure is that we went to serve but somehow what we received far out weighed what we gave.

For the entire week, the writings of W.E.B. DuBois floated in and out of my consciousness, so standing in the Presbiterio Kaqchikel, I discovered that their endless suffering, discrimination and dying has not been in vain, for there is a message for Guatemala in the blood and suffering of the indigenous people... and there is a message for us.

So that is what I said to those gathered, “I will go back and pass along your message.”

Yours in Christ,

Rita L. Walters

Director of Development
