A Little Light for the Journey

Since basketball season began, I have become accustomed but not tolerant of the weekly e-mails I receive from my son’s upper school. Sometimes it’s a missed homework, a late project or a forgotten book. As he is learning to navigate upper school, new friends, and activities for the first time, I am learning how to parent, coach and guide a teenager for the first time.  We both appear as if we are walking on a darken sidewalk filled with shadows. Many times the sidewalk offers cracks and crevices causing each of us to stumble and stagger and I often wish for more light to illuminate our path. Will Chaz mature and take seriously all he is being offered educationally? Can I continue to speak truth to power (teenagers have lots of power) in a loving and not alienating way? In the final analysis, will he grow and mature into what God will have him to be?

Henri Nouwen reminds us that, “the art of living is to enjoy what we can see and not complain about what remains in the dark.” According to Henri, we have to learn to trust that “we have enough light for the steps that follow.” This is a real joy; it reminds me that our children come through us, not from us. They are a gift of God and He is within each of them, propping them up on every leaning side as they navigate their way through adolescence.

A gentle reminder that there is still time to register for the Cultivating Generosity conference on Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. Fred Milligan, Associate for Stewardship Education, PC(USA) will host. The workshop will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County. Join us on a pre-workshop conference call. On Tuesday, January 9 at 9:30 a.m. and Thursday, January 11 at 3:00 p.m. call 1-877-597-2663 and enter access code 7591772.
