Christ Have Mercy Upon Us

God, I thank you that I am not like other people . . .  These words were read in many of our churches on October 28th.  This was the story of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector in Luke 18.  As the Rev. Jamie Dale of Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church – Woodbrook said in his sermon, neither of these are folks we desire to emulate.  And yet I must confess that there are times when I have been tempted to utter exactly the same words about people with whom I disagree.  For me, at least, it is easier to judge than to be humble.

I write you at the beginning of another difficult week in the life of the Presbytery.  Once more, we are faced with an overture to General Assembly that offers great sustenance to some while at the same time is deeply troubling to others.  Words have been spoken about the importance of justice and the authority of scripture.  At this moment, it seems that many of our hearts have been hardened and it has become more difficult for us to hear each other’s pain, each other’s hope.

At such times we are tempted to discount what others bring to the table, to the conversation, to the meeting.  We are tempted to think to ourselves, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people.’ I appreciated what I heard at Brown Memorial Woodbrook.  Jamie told us to recognize our own need for mercy since (according to those “Reformed” tenets) none of us are worthy.  As we move through this week, let us remember that we have not applied for membership in God’s family, God first claimed us.  As children of God, we are brothers and sisters.  “Christ have mercy upon us” – we plead.  Let us emulate this same mercy as we consider each other.

Blessings,

Peter Nord
