Looking For “A Still More Excellent Way.”

Last Thursday I was in Louisville to help develop a small booklet on how governing bodies can use alternative decision making methods and discernment models.  I was out of my league – sitting there with Gradye Parsons, Mark Koenig, and Vicky Curtiss among others.

I shared my own frustrations with these methods.  The time is too limited at presbytery or session meetings.  And I lifted the concern that some have that such methods weaken the prophetic voice.  Here were two responses:

I was asked, “Which denomination is the only one to have always opposed slavery and war?”   The answer, of course, is the Religious Society of Friends, the Quakers.  They are perhaps the most experienced of societies (of Northern European descent) in the use of such methods.

Vicky Curtiss also read from Weavings.  The writer (unfortunately we do not know who it is) wrote “The early Jesus community is defined by how disciples treat one another and those they meet as they follow Jesus: ‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.’ (John 13:35)”

“’Unity in the Spirit,’ as the Beatitudes make clear, consisted in being humble beggars for God’s grace, fellow mourners about the sufferings of others, colleagues in making peace . . . It meant . . . seeking to cultivate compassion that can dissipate condemnation, a love strong enough to neutralize hate, and interior ground in God deep enough to transcend the need to find security in group sameness.  Love is doing good for another, even an opponent, not the warm, fuzzy glow of tribal solidarity.”

We as a Presbytery and a denomination are in the midst of a whole hosts of paradigm shifts.  Being in the midst of such shifts is both exhilarating and frustrating.  But it is a delight to be on the journey with you and I look forward to uncovering God’s yearning for us.

Blessings,

Peter Nord
