SUMMARY:Discerning Convergence: A Theological Framework for AI and Ministry
DESCRIPTION:The Commission on Thriving Leaders and Churches ( https://baltimorepresbytery.org/thriving-leaders-churches/ ) invites you to a workshop about Artificial Intelligence and its uses within the church on Wednesday October 8th at 9 am. Guest presenter Tony Sundermeier explains that this isn’t just about artificial intelligence. It’s about how we use tools, and how they shape the kind of people we become.\nWe’ll begin with Scripture, tracing the contrast between Babel and the Ark, and reflecting on Jesus’ promise that we would do greater things. We’ll explore how tool-making flows from the image of God in us, and how it can either serve God’s purposes, or subtly pull us away from them. From there, we’ll look at the history of tools, introduce a theological framework called Discerning Convergence, and draw on the insights of Teilhard de Chardin and Jacques Ellul. We’ll break down what AI actually is, then show how it can serve ministry, from sermons to spreadsheets, without replacing the deeply relational work we’re called to do.\nThis is about discernment, not fear. It’s about using our tools wisely, faithfully, and in service of the Kingdom of God.\nTony Sundermeier is the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, a 2,000-member community of conviction and compassion in the heart of the city. He is the co-host of The New Garden, a podcast exploring the intersection of technology and theology that launches in the fall 2025.\n+ Watch the Event on YouTube\n+ View PowerPoint Presentation ( https://baltimorepresbytery.org/wp-content/uploads/Presentation1.pdf ) (odf)\n
