Elder Training Event

Saturday, October 29th – Presbytery-wide Elder Training event: Transformative Leadership: Elder Training in a New Era. Designed for new, returning, and currently-serving elders, this day-long retreat will include a variety of workshops including “The State of the Church–Reimagining Community” by Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Taylor, which will provide a positive conversation about the unique challenges and opportunities of being the church in the 2020s. It will also provide time for you to meet and get to know Elders from other congregations in the Presbytery.

The event will take place at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Mt. Airy, MD. We’ll gather at 9 am for fellowship and the programming will run from 9:30-3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided.

Jackie Taylor – The State of the Church: Reimagining Community
The Rev. Dr. Jackie Taylor will facilitate an honest and hopeful conversation about how the church community has changed since March of 2020 and the possibilities those changes offer us as church leaders.

Carl WiltonPresbyterian Polity for Elders
The Rev. Dr. Carl Wilton, who has taught polity at Princeton Theological Seminary, will provide an overview of the Presbyterian form of governance and the essentials you’ll need to know as a member of session.

Shannon Weston – Trust Building and Group Dynamics
The Rev. Shannon Weston ACC, an ICF certified coach and coach trainer, will teach you about how to build trust within your session and how to recognize and understand the group dynamics that may be at play.

Steve Nofel – The Calling to Which We Have been Called: Who We Are As Elders – Join Rev. Steve Nofel, our staff interim, for a conversation about the theological and spiritual aspects of serving as an elder.

Charese Jordan Moore and Mary Speers – Meetings: Decent, Orderly, and Effective – Ruling Elder Charese Jordan Moore and Rev. Mary Speers will provide insight and guidance on how to run an effective and efficient session meeting.

Tim Hughes Williams and Shayla Redfern – Community Engagement for Elders – Join Rev. Tim Hughes Williams and DCE Shayla Redfern for a conversation on how to lead effective community engagement with your congregation.
