Righting the Historical Wrong
The Baltimore Dakota Learning Camps Steering Committee, one of the partnerships of our Baltimore Presbytery and under the umbrella of the Commission on Reconciliation, is presenting a petition that you are urged to sign in support of changing Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day. The BDSC has been working with members of Indigenous Strong in support of their efforts to urge the Baltimore City Council to take this important step to right the past historical wrongs. The BDSC will be sending a letter to the President of the Baltimore City Council and the above mentioned petition will be included with the letter.
The Commission on Reconciliation is sending out the BDSC letter to all the congregations for their consideration in becoming another voice for this important action. The letter may be used as a model for a letter from each congregation. The hope is that Baltimore City will be a beacon of truth and will lead the way for our state to join the 57 cities and 12 states that already celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.
The BDSC is hopeful that our Presbytery will be a strong voice for this much needed change.
