The Commission on Spiritual Leader Development offers a variety of workshops and training events to resource ruling elders. Resources are available on topics such as:
- Spiritual Practices
- Preparing a sermon
- Leading small groups
Elders who would like to receive further training in order to serve as commissioned pastors can find help through the Commission on Spiritual Leader Development and our partnership with St. Mary’s University Ecumenical Institute (EI). The EI can provide several classes that fulfill the requirements for Commissioned Pastor training (as spelled out in the handbook available through the Commission on Preparation for Ministry, CPM). Partial scholarships for classes are available through SLD.
Deacons and Congregational Caregivers
Resources and training events for deacons and congregational caregivers are available through the Commission on Spiritual Leader Development. Past events have included:
- Praying with others
- Becoming a Caring Congregation
- Soul Shop: Learning to talk about suicide in your congregation in a way that removes the stigma and helps people feel safe seeking help
Church Educators gather monthly for a brown bag lunch at different churches to share ideas and support one another in ministry. The group is open to both professional and volunteer educators. For information about times and locations, contact the Associate for Spiritual Leader Development.
