From the General Presbyter
Where are all the pastors?
This is a question posed nationwide, across all denominations and Christian communities. A colleague likened the frustration to a child who has always received a desired Christmas present under the tree, but on this particular Christmas, the gift didn’t appear. The only explanations: there aren’t any in the store or we can’t afford it this year.

The next question arises naturally, “well why can’t the presbytery DO something?” Trust me, we are equally frustrated. As much as Presbytery execs interact with each other and advertise positions, the problem is deeper.
First, people are not going into pastoral ministry like they used to. Second, those in ministry are reluctant to move in a bad economy. Third, our area is expensive. Fourth, pastors are now expected to preach, teach, reach, manage buildings, sing in the choir, run day schools, visit, manage expectations (some unrealistic) lock up, open up, prepare the bulletin – especially when a church cannot afford additional staff. And after doing all that, they sit in the church library while the church argues about their terms of call every January, which for many, is on the low side.
The pandemic did a “number” on us, but we also do a “number” on ourselves! Be honest. How many people do you know that expect the pastor to do a funeral or a baptism for family members who will never darken the doors of the church, or contribute financially after that day? In the past, pastors signed up for this, now, not so much!
The good news is we have pastors who work and serve in spite of all that is happening in our world and in the church! We also have lay folks who are willing to step up and lead! It’s exciting and inspirational to see God’s call in action. Cheers to our CRE’s and our lay preachers!! Friends, it may take time for you to find someone. You may have to share a pastor with another congregation! It’s okay, you have not failed or are not a “problem church.” You are a beacon of light in your community, with or without a pastor!
