From the General Presbyter
“I’m trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it.”
– Morpheus from the movie The Matrix
My daughter is at the impressionable age where she constantly asks me about information she gets on the internet. Some of the things are so far-fetched, I have to be careful how I respond. She asked me one day, if the Matrix was true and we were really living in an alternate reality created by an outside force. My response, “Yes we are, but we ourselves have created it.”
I impress myself some days!
I have to confess that all this talk of conspiracy theories in the election or around COVID, in my opinion, represents the worst of us, but we cannot be too hard on “them” or even ourselves. After all, our faith is based on an outlandish story of a virgin conceiving a child by the Holy Spirit. How do we know this isn’t just another conspiracy theory of ancient Palestine?
The moral of this Midweek: We need to approach others and ourselves with humility, the same humility demonstrated in the Christmas story. It is not easy, when lives depend on facts and not on politics. Trust me, the facts will prevail and so will our faith. It’s how we live it out that matters.
