From the General Presbyter
What really amazed me about yesterday’s insane, insidious events at the Capitol, stoked by Donald Trump, was that the same Congress members who have enabled Trump and his vitriol, stood up and said “This is not who we are as Americans.”
This is exactly who we are as Americans.
We are a people who carry a Jesus flag while breaking windows and trashing offices. We are a people who allow white confederate flag wavers to enter the building. If a black person had done that, he or she would have been shot on sight. We are a people who believe that COVID is a hoax and argue with pastors about regathering, while a neighbor buries a loved one from the virus.
My question is – who are you, Christian? What is your contribution to the above or to other behaviors, beliefs or proclivities that cause misery and chaos to others in the faith community? How can you as a flag bearer of Jesus, truly model who He is?
It is not too late to turn around and start the New Year on a much better note. Working for justice is hard but so necessary. Building relationships is crucial. Staying safe is non-negotiable. Healing our own souls is Godly work. I believe in the Genesis text where God proclaims creation “good.” It is time to live into this!
Happy New Year!
