From the General Presbyter
O Say, Can You See
You probably didn’t know this, but I am very patriotic, and I bet you are too! Unfortunately, patriotism has been hijacked by extremists, misinterpreting and misrepresenting what it means to be an American. For the purposes of this Midweek and in anticipation of July 4, let’s see what the song writers asserted and aspired concerning this land which is “your land and my land.”

First and foremost, the above-mentioned song proclaims, “this land was made for you and me!” Not just you, but me too! Not just for those who immigrated from Europe, but those First Nation people who were here before the rest of us. What about this verse from America the Beautiful which says “O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life.” What unselfishness! What grace! What mercy we show to others not like us! Who knew?
Here is a fan favorite from the Star-Spangled Banner, our National Anthem. “O’er the land of the free-EEEE (sing it sopranos!) and the home of the brave!” Land of the free! No one is imprisoned unjustly, everyone has equal access, no one is yanked off the street because they are brown. Freedom to make a living to support your family, freedom to love, freedom to choose, freedom to live and let live. And at last, my personal favorite, “One nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” For all.
I am a Christian and a patriot! They are not mutually exclusive. I would invite you as you barbecue, or watch fireworks, or just relax, to love your country by continuing to work for justice, liberty, and peace. God Bless America…please!
